NO MORE BS: Intention and Discernment – Tools Worth Knowing

Foghorn Leghorn - MedicationParents, how many times have you witnessed a toddler going about their day, an idea crosses their face, and you can tell they are about to do something that gets that toddler in trouble?  I heard a comedian talk about witnessing this as the toddler saw the cat sleeping in the sun, the toddler crossed the room and kicked the cat.  When asked why the toddler claims “it was accident.”

What is intention?

Intention is all about deliberate action, using a plan, and involving ideas in action.  According to Webster, intention is also the healing process of a wound, but this definition is not part of our discussion.  From Latin, we find intentio as “stretching purpose” and originates with intendere meaning “towards, stretch, and tend.”

Calvin & Hobbes - Irony HurtsConsider these definitions for a moment and the story about the toddler kicking the cat.  We have a plan, a purpose, and a deliberate action.  How does the parent discern the act was deliberate; the use of observation as to what the toddler had done to the cat previously, what the toddler was doing immediately before they kicked the cat, and the attempt to use an excuse to get out of trouble.

Discerning Intention.

Never Give Up!When defining discernment, I am not entering holy waters to discuss the pieces of discernment that belong to discerning for religions.  Discernment is the ability to obtain sharp perceptions, observations that empower decision-making.  Discernment can be psychological, moral, or aesthetic.  Discernment is also defined through the contexts; scientific, normative, and formal. The process of discernment involves going past the mere perception of something and making nuanced understandings about its properties or qualities.

Note, there is also a legal definition, or standard, for discernment, “the cognitive condition of someone who understands; savvy, understanding, apprehension knowing about their actions before, after, and during the act;” which is where things get sticky when discernment and intention cross paths.  Hannity and Carlson disagree on the actions of the jury in the Derek Chauvin case.  Not being a lawyer and not knowing all the legal jargon, the best I can do is form an opinion.  I base my opinion on other high-profile cases where the media has condemned an individual as guilty before the judge and jury are formed.  Meaning, I feel the jury was intentionally and unfairly biased against Derek Chauvin due to the influence of the media and the mob outside the courtroom’s doors.Thin Blue Line

There was a shooting of a teenage girl in Columbus, Ohio, by a police officer.  The girl had a knife in hand, did not listen to the police officer responding, and lunged at another person before being shot.  Again, we come to discerning intention and split-second decision-making.  Only, in this instance, the officer has no history of the person holding a knife, only reports of a stabbing and an apparent altercation involving a knife when they arrive on the scene.  I offer no judgment in this case as this case continues to unfold, details are still being investigated, and family interviewed.  Yet, the media is already off and running their biased opinions, and mobs have formed for mobocratic justice, which is never just nor proper.

Calvin & Hobbes - Ontological QuandryUnfortunately, this pattern repeats too often, and thus the need to understand discernment and correctly discerning intention.  My intent is not to make you as adept at this practice as a police officer. In a Republic, and even in many democratic societies, the citizens need to discern and discern intention, two separate processes.  The media will sell a lurid and emotionally charged story with all the bias of a bull in a China Shop and never care about the consequences.  But, the citizen does not have the same luxury or legal protections as the media.  Hence, we must discern what the media relates and discern the media’s intention before we ever read or listen to their story/reporting of events.  Thus my intent in this article and bringing up this topic, we, the citizens, are held to a higher law than the media and cannot afford to form mobs, trust the media’s reporting, or even rely upon the press reported “facts” to discern and discern intent.

How do you make a decision requiring action?

GearsThe process for critical thinking, leading to intentional decision-making, with purposeful action, generally follows the following pattern:

      1. Gather data
        • Requires knowing the validity of the source data and trusting the sources.
      2. Organize the data
      3. Make preliminary decisions and determine an action to take.
      4. Beta test the decision through application to a minimal audience to refine the solution and ensure the integrity of the data.
      5. Roll out the entire decision, including the solution and the reasoning, take timely action.
      6. Monitor and make course corrections as needed.

Detective 4These steps are useless unless we understand our own intention before launching a decision-making process.  Consider, do you intentionally believe that others are doing their best or giving their best efforts?  Do you intentionally shut down your own opinion to consider the perceptions of others in making decisions?  Where in those steps do you stop and take a moment to ponder the short and long-term consequences of the solution devised?  When making decisions, do you ever consider the axiom, “If a solution is not Win/Win, everyone loses?”  Do we fear failing to make a correct decision if the future teaches us something new about the data changing the pattern of decision-making?  How do you learn?

Let us briefly examine that axiom, “If a solution is not Win/Win, everyone loses,” does not mean making everyone happy.  A good compromise leaves everyone upset and feeling cheated and settled on the issue under consideration.  Yet, the media and many politicians firmly believe that unless they win everything they desire in a solution, they have been robbed and feel justified in stirring up public angst and creating a worse problem.  The adults in society must understand both the good and the ill in creating Win/Win solutions, or all is lost, and the patients run the asylum.

Anton Ego 4In going back to the analogy of the toddler kicking the cat.  Does the solution in the short-term mean corrective behavior modification for a long-term lesson learned?  Does the better solution involve instruction as well as behavior modification?  Have we, the parents, discerned correctly the intention of the toddler sufficient to justify our decision?  Will the cat be safe around the toddler in the future because of the action we take at that moment?

How do you learn?

In answering this question, we must return to the topic of failure.  Do we consider failure a learning moment?   Do we appreciate the power of failing as integral to achieving success?  A close relative of mine in high school went out for the track team as a pole vaulter.  I looked into pole vaulting to learn more and was surprised at the ways, means, and multiple times the pole vaulter will fail.  The technical skills to pole vault are incredible, almost as unbelievable as being an operations manager in a manufacturing environment and being a parent.  Hence, the need for discernment and intention.

2012-08-13 07.37.28I close with a challenge, use discernment more intentionally in learning your way through failure to success.  Liberty and freedom allow us the power to fail our way to success, but only if we consciously choose to learn and discern better our steps in decision-making.  Know your intent, take a moment every day to consider your intent, and purposefully make decisions to live your intentions.  Trust yourself to discern.  Your confidence in discerning is key to understanding and using your intention to power decision-making as a process.  Please remember, what I am discussing requires time, you will fail, but you will also win and win BIG!  Enjoy the journey of discovery!

NO MORE BS: Postlude to The Declaration of Independence

ApathyLet me reiterate; only for emphasis, armed rebellion is not what I am calling for, advocating, or even advancing as a principle for throwing off the onerous chains of the tyrannical government America is currently suffering.  The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints reveres as scripture a book called the Doctrine and Covenants, and section 134 represents 12 statements on government that I hold dear and believe in strongly.

Statement 1:  I firmly believe that God instituted government for the benefit of man.  All representatives of any form of government will be answerable to GOD for how they held their offices and honored the power the people granted through the consent of the governed.

Statement 2:  I know from personal experience that peace is only possible under the Rule of Law, held inviolate, that secures the individual the maximum free exercise of conscience, the right and control of their personal property, and protection of life.

Statement 3:  Governments require civil officers to execute government and enforce the law, but these civil officers and magistrates are also held accountable to GOD for holding their office and carrying out the duties appointed.  Civil officers and magistrates’ responsibilities require equity and justice to be paramount in executing their official duties.

Statement 4:  Separation of church and state is to be held inviolate.  The church may punish member’s conscience but cannot refuse them life, liberty, or property.  That government may restrain crime but never control a person’s conscience.  The distinction in the separation of church and state is evident; religion may influence the conscience of men but not deprive them of life, liberty, or property.  In the punishment of crime, the government may deprive of life, liberty, or property but cannot and should not control conscience.

Statement 5:  Sedition and rebellion are unbecoming of every citizen!  Hence, my disgust at the riots, mobocracy, and terrorism witnessed by seditious people of all political types and flavors.  Laws should be written to best protect the public interest while holding sacrosanct freedom of conscience!

Statement 6:  Civil officers, elected representatives, and magistrates deserve to be honored in their appointed stations, and every person owes deference and respect in a locality to the laws of that locality.  Hence the only path to freedom and harmony among people.

Statement 7:  As long as respect and reverence are shown by a religious society to the laws of a locality, the government does not have the right to infringe upon the consciences of men and proscribe religious duties and practices.

Statement 8:  The commission of crimes should be punished, and all men are responsible for stepping forward to assist in supporting the public peace, tranquility, and harmony in a population and aid in bringing offenders to justice.

Statement 9: The government supports equality of religious freedom as the best possible method of ensuring public harmony and equality under the law.  Thus, mingling government and religion should be refused to protect all men’s right to the freedom of their conscience.

Statement 10:  Religious societies have the right to handle their affairs where members are concerned, provided the member is not deprived of life, liberty, or property, and excluding the member from fellowship is the extent of the punishment allowed.  These practices should not ever be interfered with by government officers or magistrates!

Statement 11:  All men possess the right to appeal to the civil government for redress when personal abuse occurs at the civil officers’ and magistrates’ hands.  I support all men the right to defend themselves and their properties from unlawful incursions by the government when time and exigency deprive the assaulted from appealing to the civil officers and magistrates for a peaceful redress of wrongs.

Statement 12: It is all about preaching religion freely and without government incursions, provided the laws of the land are followed.

Detective 3I do not speak for The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints!  I respect and honor the books and resources provided for their clarity and their simplicity.  I have abbreviated the above statements to reflect my personal beliefs and respect the intellectual property owned by The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints.  I firmly believe that these statements embody the principles found in the US Constitution, the Magna Charta, the Articles of Confederation, and The Declaration of Independence.  By following these statements, society improves, regardless of the government flavor found locally.

DutyI support obeying, honoring, and sustaining the laws of the land upon which you live and work.  That through the laws of your land, just grievances may be brought forward to your government officials, civil officers, and magistrates, and redress for wrongs made right.  I do not support sedition and rebellion in any shape, form, or creed, as this is the path to anarchy and chaos.  As an American [A(h)-ME-I-CAN], I support the logical separation of church and state as described above and will support any organized religious belief in the public square, provided the religious beliefs do not infringe upon another person’s rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

I support a “Liberty FIRST Culture;” join me!

NO MORE BS: The US Constitution – Understanding Begets Action

LinkedIn ImageSince February 2020, to date America, and the world has witnessed the cruel and unyielding hand of mobocracy practiced.  Mobocracy is the rule of the mob transformed into governance.  Consider the actions of several city councils and state legislatures where defunding the police has become the hottest political topic.  The crowd screams for changes to the law, politicians pander, politicians pay “Dane-Geld,” and the laws change to satisfy the mob’s appetites.  Thus, mobocracy is being practiced.  Piven (2008) refers to mobocracy as when ordinary people “… rise up in anger and hope, defy the rules that ordinarily govern their daily lives, and, by doing so, disrupt the workings of the institutions in which they are enmeshed.”

To everyone who reads this post, I will without doubt or fear maintain that the actions of the politicians, allowing mobocracy, and emphatically proclaim, “You are committing an illegal act; and must be held accountable before the bar of justice for your heinous crimes!”  The politicians’ actions to appease the mob, rule through mobocracy, and thwart the will of the governed to the masses of screaming mobsters is treason, calumny of the blackest sort, and a rejection of your oath of office, rendering you and your authority moot!

PatriotismBeginning with the US Constitution’s Preamble, a person will find why the government was instituted.  “… in order to form a more perfect Union (government), establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”  The politicians who have sworn an oath to uphold the US Constitution who deny these statements are already guilty of treason and breach of office.  Domestic tranquility cannot be achieved through the rule of the mob.  Domestic tranquility cannot magically appear; it must be built through law and order, through justice and mercy before the bar of justice, and under a single “Rule of Law” for all citizens.  Domestic tranquility must be fought for when tyranny rears its ugly head.  The general welfare of the population can only be established by obedience to the just laws of the society to which a person belongs.  Defunding the police tramples the welfare of society, domestic tranquility, and calls for the defense of the rule of law by every freedom-loving person in that society.

Article 1 Section 1: Established for every government in America the separation of powers, where legislation is equally shared between a house of representatives and a senate, who must work together in their separate but equal duties to fulfill the actions dictated in the preamble.  Sections 2 and 3 establish the finer points regarding the house of representatives, the senate, the executive branch’s powers in filling vacancies and specifying the terms of office.

Finest HourArticle 1 Sections 4-8: Establish taxes, the military forces, the day of elections, when a term begins for an elected officer to the Congress, and other government details.  Nowhere in these articles does it allow for one branch to dominate another branch.  Nowhere in these articles provides for the senate of the house of representatives to do the others’ job.  Each government establishment has a specific job to perform, and those politicians who refuse to do their job are breaching their oaths of office.

Consider the actions of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  Nowhere in the US Constitution is she allowed to meddle in world politics, write letters to foreign governments, or pass legislation that has not been read.  Yet, all these and more are regularly done, instead of doing her job as outlined in the preamble, to improve the American people she is duly sworn to support.  Her failure to represent all her district is the most egregious example because she is also third in line for the President has been re-elected so many times, and is the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.  Thus, not only does she speak for her district, but she also represents all the US House of Representatives of all parties.

One of the most explicit lessons discovered in life is that of genetic behavior.  We pass behavior onto our children, our acquaintances, and our circles of influence.  The problem with genetic behavior is that of exponentialism or the exponential growth between generations.  Research supports that cheating behavior in high school is found in cheating an employer later in life.  Research also relates that those witnessing the cheating behavior will then steal.  The third generation of people the behavior is passed onto will steal more significant items, cheat more, and commit more crimes.  The cycle keeps building until the criminal justice system is overloaded and hard crimes are committed.

The Duty of AmericansIn the political realm, we see the same exponential growth of behavior.  Speaker Pelosi is witnessed by her party, who then act as she does and commits larger or worse infractions than the Speaker.  If you look at those termed the “The Squad,” the representatives are by far worse than Speaker Pelosi.  The Squad learned how to be detestable to freedom-loving peoples from the Speaker and the second-generation politicians surrounding Speaker Pelosi.  Want another example?  Look at any recent (2000 to present) presidential election, and you will still find traces of previous President Clinton in the actions and words of the candidates of both parties.  Consider Mitt Romney’s candidacy; he is very Bill Clintonesque in his politics and speech mannerisms, which remains the main reason he failed as a candidate for President.

Thus, freedom-loving people, who support justice, desire domestic tranquility, seek to provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and well-being of others, and work tirelessly to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, witness these politicians and want them removed, and held accountable for their crimes.  Not to punish without cause, but to support the common good in America.  We have courts, lawyers, judges, etc., to separate the crimes committed from the criminal committing; this is the epitome of the word justice.  The US Criminal Justice System is imperfect, without doubt, but it remains the best system the world has ever seen and deserves support from law-abiding and freedom-loving people.

DetectiveArticle 1 Section 9:  Deals with two legal precedents that are much maligned and abused.  Immigration and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.  Immigration is a topic for a different post.  However, the Writ of Habeas Corpus is crucial to this discussion.  Habeas Corpus is, “… The legal procedure that keeps the government from holding you indefinitely without showing cause. When you challenge your detention by filing a habeas corpus petition, the executive branch must explain to a neutral judge its justification for holding you.”  The Writ of Habeas Corpus can be suspended, and American History, including recent history, has provided examples of when and why habeas corpus has been denied, suspended, or revoked.  The riots and acts of domestic terrorism are a clear example of why the Writ of Habeas Corpus can be and should be suspended.  Rebellion and the breach of public safety are two different excuses for denying habeas corpus, and rioters and terrorists deserve to have habeas corpus suspended.  Instead, the prisons have turned into a revolving door, the criminal justice system perverted, and the criminals laugh!

Make no mistake; I am not advocating for the refusal of these people to have their day in court, before an impartial judge, to be sentenced for their crimes and held accountable before the bar of justice.  I am advocating that until their trials can be arranged, those caught terrorizing America through mobocracy deserve to be held in prison awaiting the slow turning of the wheels of justice.  When you break the peace of society, you give up your rights and liberties; thus, these mob members deserve to be held and witness their rights to habeas corpus rescinded.

DutyArticle 1:  Has several items that pertain to the illegality of state governors during the current COVID-19 health crisis, reflecting that these governors do not know the law and are in breach of their oaths of office.  When the governor of New Mexico made a law stating that all the citizens of Arizona must be quarantined, interrupting the free flow of commerce from state-to-state, the governor forfeited her authority for political points, and the US Congress should have been demanding corrective behavior from the NM State Legislators.  Yet, not a peep has been witnessed.

COVID-19 does not represent a sufficient “imminent danger” to refuse or interfere with commerce passing between states.  The “public health measures” enacted by the various state governors are a travesty of justice, unconstitutional, interferes with the people’s rights and liberties, and damage the commerce and economy of the United States.  Where are the politicians at the Federal Level to correct these abuses?

Articles 2 and 3: establish the executive and judicial branches of American governance.  These articles remain critical to freedom-loving people as the articles clearly dictate terms in office, how to perform their duties, and establish the various courts in the judicial system.  A jury trial is set forth without restriction and remains a crucial component in all trials.  Section 3 of Article 3 contains two items of note.  Item 1 defines treason narrowly and specifically; item 2 discusses the penalty of treason.  “Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them (the United States), or in adhering to their enemies (following an enemy’s directions), giving them aid and comfort (monetary means, housing, food, or other transferable goods).”

Detective 4A legal dictionary provides a slightly broader definition of treason, “The offense of attempting by overt [or covert] acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign’s family.  The betrayal of a trust: treachery.”  Therein lies the justification for labeling the actions of politicians who breach the public trust with treason.  Hence, the politician who breaks their oath of office to support and defend the US Constitution is committing treason.

Articles 5-7: Deal with how the US Constitution can be amended, national debt, the supremacy of the US Constitution in America, oaths of office, and ratification of the US Constitution.  With these final words, the US Constitution closed, “Done in convention by the unanimous consent of the states present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty-seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our Names.”  Every member of the US Military swears an eternal commitment to upholding this document, securing the rights and laws of the United States as prescribed therein, and following the orders of the commander in chief before God.  I have had the privilege of taking that oath six times in my life.

The Oath of Enlistment: “I, [State your full legal name], do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So, help me, God.”

Image - Eagle & FlagI will not allow the US Constitution to be thrown down and mobocracy, meritocracy, democracy, communism, socialism, or any other form of government to supersede the US Constitution in the United States of America’s borders and territories.  To those politicians working hand-in-hand with the mobs and others to destroy America, you are committing treason and will one day answer for your crimes before the bar of justice.  During my military service, I read a quote applicable to the relationship between politicians working to destroy America and freedom lovers who support the US Constitution “No truer friend; no fiercer enemy!”  No truer friend can be found than I in the US Constitution’s and the Bill of Rights support.  No fiercer enemy can be found than I to those working to suppress the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights; “So, help me, God!”.

The US Constitution – Understanding the Paradigm
